A Brief History of Aspen
The history of Aspen, Colorado can be traced back to the mining town originally named Ute City and finally renamed Aspen in 1880. It was one of the most productive silver mining towns in the U.S.A and continued to expand until by 1893 a hospital, banks, an opera house and two theatres were added to the once small settlement. After the economic collapse, many Aspen mines closed down and most people finding themselves out of work abandoned the mining town. However, the many fine buildings and houses in addition to the exceptional snow conditions finally gave rise to the first investments towards equipped ski areas that came to life by the 1930s and eventually developed into what is today one of the most renowned skiing resorts in the world.
